Life in the Levant around 1400 BCE
One of my favorite parts of writing historical fiction is researching so I can build an accurate picture of the characters' lives. In this series, I share some of the insights I've gathered. Check out the book links below to hear your favorite Bible characters share details from their lives.

What were the 12 men doing?
The twelve men Moses sent into Canaan are often referred to as the Twelve Spies. The Hebrew verb used to describe their task is tur. This word is used 23 times in the Old Testament. In the New American Standard Bible, it is translated:
- explore/explored/explores (3),
- follow, guide, investigate, selected (1 each)
- seek (2),
- spy/spied/spying (13),
- names of traders (2)
Of the thirteen times the verb is translated “spy”, twelve are referencing this group of men. Maybe they weren’t spies, so much as explorers.
I Stood Alone
The twelve of us walked together through Canaan.
They saw the giants.
I saw the promises.
